What is a Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser?

A Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser (RTO) is an industrial equipment designed for the treatment of exhaust air or waste gases. The primary function of an RTO is to destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), and other odorous emissions. This is achieved by oxidizing the harmful substances in the waste gas at high temperatures, typically ranging from 800°C to 1100°C (1472°F to 2012°F).

How Does It Work?

Inlet Valve

The waste gas is first directed into the RTO through an inlet valve.

Heat Recovery Chamber

The gas then passes through a heat recovery chamber filled with ceramic media. This chamber preheats the incoming gas by recovering heat from the outgoing clean air.

Combustion Chamber

The preheated gas moves into a combustion chamber where it is heated to the oxidation temperature. At this high temperature, VOCs and other pollutants are chemically oxidized, converting them into harmless substances like carbon dioxide and water vapor.

Heat Exchange

The clean, hot air exits the combustion chamber and passes back through the heat recovery chamber. Here, the outgoing air transfers its heat to the ceramic media, which will be used to preheat the next cycle of incoming waste gas.

Outlet Valve

Finally, the treated air is released into the atmosphere through an outlet valve.
